I got a fright, I must confess,
As I brushed my teeth this morning.
There you were, in the mirror,
Ma, you popped up without warning.
My greys have merged with yours I see,
My eyes flash the same way too.
The years have smudged my sharp jawline,
And turned me into you.
Folk said how much I looked like you,
I never saw it till just now.And yet, here I am, in the mirror,
With your chin, your smile, your brow.
It isn’t just our appearance, Ma,
I speak like you these days.
The funny annoying things you said,
Have become a part of my own ways.
Pictures of you were a challenge for me,
I worried so about the grief.
But I have found you here, in my mirror,
And am filled with wild relief.
Relieved to have you by my side,
And, also, one more thought…
If I have turned into you, Ma,
My daughter will soon be me, will she not?

So relatable for many people and yet so personal.
